Walter R. Sundling PTA
Home of the Paladins
Dear Sundling Families:
Spring is definitely in the air at Walter R. Sundling Junior High. This is a very busy time at the junior high as we prepare to close out one school year (13-14) and gear up for another (14-15). Our students and staff continue to focus on a successful end to the 2013-2014 school year. There is much work to be done and many goals to accomplish during the next few months. Track and Field season is in full swing, Spring Intramurals are starting, Spring MAP testing is up and running at each grade level, and Positive Paladins continue to be handed out by staff for good behavior following our three basic rules of Be Respectful! Be Responsible! Be Safe! Congratulations to our coaches and players on a great winter season of sports. Thank you to wrestling coaches Mr. Young and Mr. Klimas, and to volleyball coaches Mr. Janosch and Mrs. Olson for helping our student athletes learn the basic skills and fundamentals of each sport, but also teaching them sportsmanship and teamwork. Your leadership was shown through our students on the wrestling mat and volleyball court all season!
Our annual When Pigs Fly Event to honor Sundling Staff that have passed away during their teaching career takes place on Thursday, May 29. 2014. This year, we will once again be collecting donations throughout the month of May for the Palatine Food Pantry and also for PATH (Palatine Assisting Through Hope). More information will be sent home with students in the early part of May, after our annual Pig Walk kick off assembly. The When Pigs Fly Event is a great day filled with various service projects for our students to be involved in and a great way to show Paladin Pride. Be on the lookout for more information about the special event.
Please join us for our annual Sundling Junior High Open House on Thursday, May 1st. We invite the incoming 6th grade parents to join us for a welcome meeting at 6:30 PM and the current Sundling families at 7:00 PM for a brief general PTA Meeting in the auditorium for those who wish to attend. Following this meeting, the building will be open until 8:00 PM for parents to visit classrooms with Sundling Staff, and view the wide variety of student work and projects that will be on display, including our 8th grade History Expo projects. PTA will provide refreshments and coffee during the evening. We hope that you will join us to celebrate the hard work of our students throughout this school year.
As you are well aware, the safety and security of our students is the top priority for Sundling at all times. For this reason, District 15 has carefully developed specific procedures designed to ensure children’s safety in all circumstances. Again this school year, an additional drill, a “relocation” exercise, is being conducted at all schools with the cooperation and assistance of the local police department. A school relocation is conducted when circumstances make it unsafe for students and staff to remain in the building. In this case, the school population temporarily “relocates” to another facility until it is safe to return. We want you to be aware that Sundling’s relocation drill will be scheduled with assistance of the Palatine Police Department sometime this spring. During the relocation drill, Sundling students will be bused to the Winston Campus Junior High for a short period of time during the school day.
Just a reminder: Teacher Appreciation Week is May 5th through May 9th.
As always thank you for your continued support of our school and staff. It has been a great school year thus far, and we look forward to a strong finish as our students work to their full potential and continue to make growth.
Enjoy the final few months of the school year!
